Out of the 10 river basins, Attanagalu Oya has a high priority for flood protection since it hosts a large population, and important social & economic infrastructure in Gampaha District, which is considered to be the fastest growing area in the country. Gampaha and Ja-Ela are major cities in Gampaha District and have been affected by flooding frequently and most recently in 2016 and 2018. With the mentioned impending developments in the study area, the applications of Flood mitigatory measures for Gampaha and J-Ela have become very important.
